Heat waves and heavy rainfall events as conse quences of climate change are having an immense impact on our quality of life. Increasing land sealing is leading to the so-called urban heat island effect: Overheated urban neighbourhoods are causing heat stress and promoting high concentrations of pollut ants in the air. They are also partly responsible for high levels of precipitation and urban flash flooding that overwhelm municipal wastewater systems. Green roof systems and facade greening can be sustainable solutions here. Research and industry have further developed what are, from today’s per spective, “simple” green roof structures into high- performance, multifunctional problem-solvers thatbenefit the urban climate in a variety of ways.
