Not yet officially inaugurated, this new library, built to house the media resources of Dresden’s state and university libraries, was opened for use on a limited basis in July. The site is a former sports ground on the university campus in the southern suburbs bordered by an earth rampart with mature lime trees. The slim cubes of the library blend well with the surroundings, and from the street are almost hidden behind the spreading trees. Much of the functional space is placed below ground, leaving only two simple, parallel volumes, each 47 m long, 16.5 m wide and 19?m high, rising above it. In the northern, four-storey block are public facilities such as a café, lecture theatre, seminar rooms and a book museum, and in the southern block are five storeys of offices for the administration.
