The history of this former NATO rocket station had no influence on the choice of materials nor on Tadao Ando’s architecture. What was once a prohibited military area has been transformed into a place of open cultural exchange with a new architectural emphasis, yet without removing the traces of the past. The more complex approach adopted here differs from that of the nearly 6,000 other museums in Germany and in particular from the allegedly so successful attempt by the Guggenheim empire to develop museums as theme parks.
