In New Canaan the influence of modernism as practiced in the 1950s by architects such as Philip Johnson and Marcel Breuer can still be felt. John Black Lee built his own home there in this vein in 1956. The present owners asked Kuma to renovate the existing structure and add a kitchen, bedroom and dining area. He placed these functions in a separate structure, and connected it to the existing building via a glazed passageway. The design for the new lightweight pavilion pays homage to Lee’s architectural vocabulary without imitating it. The new veranda assumes the height and form of the original one and hovers above the sloping topography. The L-shaped floor plan provides a measure of intimacy.
