Modern living in the centre of Hamburg? This dream became a reality on a triangular site that had been the parking lot of a publishing house – not an easy task, due to the heterogeneity of the area in question. The architect decided to halve the building massing, creating two identical, eight-storey buildings. The height mediates between the small-scale historic fabric to the north and the large-scale office buildings to the south. The form, depth and orientation were developed to arrive at optimal lighting and views. There are four apartments – with flexible floor plan designs and ranging in surface area from 53 to 118 m² – on each level above the ground storey. The facade’s curtain wall elements – warm wood surfaces, dark glass panels and light-toned stone, alternating chess-board-like with storey-high glazing – enclose the reinforced concrete construction. Like the building massing, the facades also serve as mediators: they mirror the grid of the neighbouring office complex, and their materiality sets up a connection to the inviting atmosphere in the adjoining Gänge district.
