The architect's own apartment is located on the ground floor and basement of a house in a late Victorian terrace built around 1880. The basement, a former cellar, is characterised by the self-supporting, brick vaulted ceiling and the use of solid materials, while the ground floor has a lighter and more open feel. The staircase down to the basement, where the bedrooms are now located, was installed into an existing staircase opening. Solid limestone slabs form the staircase, each slab stacked on top of the next. The material and construction of the stair continues the solid nature of the basement space forming a masonry bridge between the two floors. The light steel railing underscores the transition.
