Though quite modest in scale, the German-Chinese pavilion erected for the Expo 2010 Shanghai attracts attention by virtue of the materials used and its transparent structure. The bamboo canes, for example, are giant stems up to 23 cm in diameter with stainless-steel node fittings concreted into the ends. The spatial enclosure is formed by a screen supported by a bamboo-veneered steel SHS structure, while the internal platform is borne by specially developed beams in laminated bamboo. Together with the bamboo parquet and furniture, these elements demonstrate the versatility of this renewable raw material.
