Night or day, it’s clear to passers-by what is sold in this shop in Innsbruck town centre. Cleverly lit shelves and a black background focus attention on the multi-coloured spines of the books. Two shop windows, each with reveals up to 1 metre deep, reinforce the invitation to browse. Books line the walls on both levels of the store. The shelving – a simple system of slotted uprights, height-adjustable supports and coated chipboard – seems to double in height, thanks to a reflective coating on the chipboard ceiling. Black dominates the whole of the interior – it’s on the mastic-asphalt flooring, the ceiling, the fritted glass lining in the window reveals, the book shelves and the free-standing units.
