As part of an extension project for a savings bank in Lüdenscheid, it was necessary to construct a bridge linking the existing building and extension with newly acquired accommodation on the other side of a public road. In its urban context, the bridge, together with the distinctive bank buildings, marks a physical 'gateway' into the old town and pedestrian zone. The bridge spans 30 m, and is a steel and concrete composite construction consisting of two U-shaped welded steel girders. A slim concrete slab, in conjunction with efficient undertensioning takes up compression and horizontal bending forces caused through wind loading. Panels of 20mm thick laminated safety glass, joined on a central ridge, form in effect a three pin arch.
