In the heart of Budapest’s historic quarter, the Central European University (CEU) has given itself a new public face with the folded geometry of a limestone facade. The neighbouring historic town houses form part of the university campus, although, this is only revealed internally. Here, courtyards with glass roofs draw light deep into the plan and create a variety of lighting moods and learning atmospheres.

The bright and open architecture is an expression of CEU’s liberal stance, which is a thorn in the side of Orban’s Government. While the row over CEU’s accreditation in Hungary continues, the university’s relocation to Vienna is decided and the future of this outstanding building remains uncertain.
