Located outside the small village of Krumbach in Vorarlberg, Salgenreute Chapel replaces an earlier dilapidated building that once stood in the same position on this rocky ridge. As all the external surfaces are covered with larch shingles the new building looks monolithic from outside, but in fact the space beyond the brass-lined portal is divided into two.
In the main space, which can seat 24, all the surfaces are of untreated fir, whereas the fir panelling in the triangular, slighly elevated apse is white-limed. The window with fixed glazing in the back wall of the apse allows the gaze to roam across the expansive fields, hills and meadows of the Bregenz Forest. At the same time the daylight entering the space creates a sublime atmosphere.
