The new building that rises out of the ruins of the small chapel of San Juan de Ruesta is built of solid sandstone blocks and reconstructs the volume of the original building. While the newly built parts relate to the historic building in terms of colour and materiality, they can nevertheless be easily distinguished from the medieval rubble stone walls. The chapel forms part of a settlement in Aragon that emerged from an Islamic fortress in the 9th century. It later fell into Christian hands and by the 19th century had grown into a settlement consisting of about one hundred houses.
