The library is part of Chicago's Regional Library System offering full services to a specific community. The first level accommodates large public uses not requiring exterior exposure. The upper level is entirely open. A major element is the glass-domed enclosure of the lobby ceiling below relating the two levels by the penetration of daylight. Overlooking the entire space is a mezzanine for the chief librarian's office, and a special collections room for books and history memorabilia.
