La Balma is the first cooperative housing project in Barcelona based on a competition. Due to the participative planning process, the omission of parking spaces and a solid timber load bearing structure optimised by use of BIM, the corner lot building is considered a textbook case of sustainable and affordable housing for inner cities.
As part of a sequence of public buildings including a hospital, a kindergarten and a school, the residential building was also intended to have a public character.
