In formal terms, buildings can reflect how nature inspired their design. If their construction materials have an industrial origin, however, the design of details requires particular diligence to express this dualism.
The King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture in Dharan is an exemplary architectural answer to this challenge, designed by Snøhetta based on a commission they received from the Saudi-Arabian oil company Aramco. The five above-ground building volumes are reminiscent of rock formations that were eroded by sand and wind. They are covered by delicate linear patterns made of curved stainless steel tubes that are reminiscent of fingerprints.
