Built in 1904, this former grain store is situated at the heart of the “Alter Hafen” rehabilitation area, adjoining an artificial basin of water on the banks of the River Main. Now, after its restoration, extension and conversion, the complex forms the cultural focus of this part of the Bavarian city. The imposing timber structure in the central section of the old building was preserved in its entirety and serves as the entrance and foyer, with a museum shop. The two side tracts were gutted, and cubic concrete structures were inserted within the external walls, creating ideal conditions for exhibitions. The space between the refurbished outer walls and the concrete cubes serves as a circulation route with stairs and lifts, so that visitors are constantly reminded of the old building substance as they pass through the museum. Cubic structures were also added at both ends of the building to enlarge the existing floor area. The facades of these new tracts consist of open-spaced horizontal stone strips that harmonize with the old stone facades and also allow light to enter the linking corridors. On the river front, the existing structure is complemented by two shimmering green glass cubes, which contain a small restaurant with a riverside terrace, a multi-purpose space, a library and offices. From the outside, one can faintly see the concrete walls and openings behind the glass facades. With an overall floor area of 7,200 m2, the building accommodates the municipal collection of art and the Peter C. Ruppert private collection of Concrete Art, as well as providing space for temporary exhibitions, a theatre and workshops.
