Through the centuries, the Santa Maria la Real complex has undergone many changes and extensions. The password for the 20th century was restoration and conversion into a cultural centre. The upper cloister was reconstructed with a new roof as an uninterrupted open circulation gallery. By inserting platforms and balconies with connecting gangways at staggered levels into the ancient refectory, ample space for exhibitions was realized as well as free circulation and rapid viewing of the exhibits provided for.
