A water- and energy-efficient urban district based on multifunctional blue-green infrastructure is taking shape in Leipzig. The Leipziger BlauGrün research project is concerned with the development of a new waterand energy efficient district in the city. At the focus is the former Eutritzscher Freiladebahnhof rail freight depot and sidings, a 25 ha area of disused land not far from Leipzig’s main railway station. This is “Leipzig 416”, an urban district development with about 2,100 homes for some 3,700 people, a 5.5 ha park, school and sports campus, two children’s nurseries, social and cultural facilities, and less traffic. Researchers at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) are contributing to the district’s new infrastructure with scenarios and technical solutions for local water and energy management.
