Detail: You began your career in film and photography, and later turned to glass. How did that happen?Carpenter: At the school of architecture where I was studying in New York, there was a small glass facility. The material fascinated me, and I actually took courses in glass there while I was still in architecture. Then I changed from architecture to sculpture. My interest in glass always involved light.
