"The current architecture scene in China, on one hand, is very blind, with a kind of madness, and with no consciousness for China’s meaningfulness. In the past years, the so-called quality of construction has been improved a lot, but still there’s no consciousness about who, what, where, and why we have to build like this. There’s no intellectual discussion, or meaningful exchange, because the structure of the state is still the worst kind of structure. It is bureaucratic, and irresponsible, so a stage to discuss a potential or distinctive contemporary Chinese architecture is simply not there. One day people will be much more conscious about what they are doing, but today they are not. Only if there’s some kind of scale, and speed, as a phenomenon, as a madness, which reflects the human condition, will architecture be meaningful." - Ai Weiwei on China’s current architecture scene.
