One of the principle demands of the modern movement was for honesty of construction design, for making the structure legible and thus allowing it to become an element in the design. Le Corbusier’s “five points” theory
owes its impact to the combination of structural principles with the design and spatial possibilities deriving from those principles. The Villa Savoye of 1929 illustrates this very well – in every floor the structural principle is made visible in a different way and becomes a key influence in the design. Honesty of construction (as well as functionality) has become a central ethical requirement of modern architectural theory, so much so that until recently it was accepted without question and took on an almost timeless validity.
