Often the term “high-rise block” has a somewhat negative connotation commonly associated with uniform housing developments from the 1960s and 70s. The new concept of the “housing tower” sounds much more attractive, however, and the acceptance of living at a height has changed.

According to a study by the Bulwiengesa research institute, 45.5 per cent of Germans today could imagine living in a high-rise block. In practice, though, only a small number of people actually choose this form of housing.

Families with children are rarely to be found in the new, glazed residential tower blocks. The proportion of singles and dual-income households with high earnings, on the other hand, is large. They are in a better position to pay the prices for dwellings that lie mostly in the luxury sector of the market; for building to a great height is not cheap.
