In the past 25 years, working productivity in building has changed little. In fact, it has fallen by 3 per cent. Not even the introduction of EDP and CAD has made much difference. We would seem to be doing something wrong.

For 25 years, designtoproduction has been developing demanding architectural
schemes and generating data sets for digital production. We should like to apply this experience to more conventional projects as well. We don’t just wish to increase productivity in the building sector, though. We wish to extend the design latitude of architects, for many rationalization measures in the construction industry have been accompanied by a restriction of the design scope – without ultimately increasing overall production.

Successful planning depends above all on not forgetting anything that is crucial to the fulfilment of an assignment. That, in turn, is a matter of training, experience, imagination – in other words, of professional thinking. Modern planning tools will be of only limited aid to us in this. There is no sense in combining tools of this kind with a theoretical planning approach that dates from the previous century.

One of the goals of our present work is to derive visions and concepts for the future from a critical assessment of our planning and production reality in the world of construction. That it is not sufficient to focus on individual aspects is already evident. A confident overview is needed in order to take concrete steps in the direction of a new planning and building culture.
