The Hitotei Tea House is one of two old buildings of its kind in the grounds of the Ninna-ji temple on the outskirts of Kyoto. Built probably at the end of the 18th century, the tea house was placed under state protection as early as 1937. From 1997 to 1999, it underwent a comprehensive restoration, which is the subject of this paper. Christoph Henrichsen
