“Sustainability” is a term that has its origins in forestry. In many regions of central Europe, especially those with a mining tradition, the capacity of forests had been exceeded and their limitations became apparent in the late Middle Ages. The concept of sustainability was first postulated in 1713 by Carl von Carlowitz (1645–1714), head of the regional mines inspectorate in the Electorate of Saxony, in the context of an increasing shortage of timber at a national level.?
