Over the course of history, works of architecture have repeatedly been altered, enlarged, and reconfigured. This is reflected in the refurbished building, corresponding to the respective demands of the time, be it in the altered shape and size of spaces or the new surface tectonics. There are a variety of reasons to retain a historic spatial structure, or to at least modify parts of it. The architect’s analysis may indeed be pragmatic in nature, oriented to what is feasible economically, or what the schedule or technical aspects allow, and thus determine that a new building is out of the question.
