Departure gate 13: the travelator hums, and slowly the coloured zones of the 1,000-metre-long tunnel glide past, enveloping passengers in a cocoon of light. What would the underground Terminal 1 of Munich Airport be without Keith Sonnier’s lighting art? The installation “Connection RedBlueYellow” holds a promise of lightness even before departure. Projects involving lighting art are becoming increasingly common and are quite distinct from the spontaneous, undesigned enchantments of city lights. The modern metropolis is distinguished above all by its night-time appearance; and often that has nothing to do with design at all. The lighting craze is on the increase, and with it the shortcomings of staged nocturnal architecture, with so many floodlit facades that would be better left shrouded in darkness.
