Facades can symbolically correspond to the function of the building they envelop. However, that has become rather seldom these days, with notable exceptions. The Education Centre for technical professions by Atelier Kempe Thill and Osar Architects is such an exception, situated on the site of a former coal mine on the urban fringe of Genk in Belgium.

The frameless, up to 7 m tall glazing of the ground floor spaces and the filigree steel pergolas in front of the upper floors hint at the idea behind the new building: to inspire young people with technology and communicate to them how things are constructed and produced.
