In order to transform the former Coop distribution centre in the Lysbüchel area of Basel into the Elys cultural and commercial building, the planners of the office baubüro in situ performed only absolutely necessary interventions in the existing structure. They selected pre-used construction components as far as possible, which allowed saving the embedded energy that a new building typically produces and avoiding a significant amount of construction waste. The three storey functional building erected in 1982 is situated in the St. Johann district in the city’s north.
