Concrete Shells

Ulrich Müther’s multipurpose hall in Magdeburg from 1964 has been empty since 1997. The architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) want to prepare the hall for new uses by reinforcing each 48 × 48 m hypar shell on both the inside and outside with a 10 mm layer of carbon reinforced concrete.
Heavy loads, minimum material use, optimum efficiency: like no other, shell structures unite design and structural requirements in a single form. A look at the history of thin-shell concrete structures and their prospects for future development.
