Essay: Housing in Vienna

The Karl-Marx-Hof in Vienna’s 19th district is one of the city’s landmarks. This housing complex for around 5,000 residents was built in 1927–1930 to plans by city architect Karl Ehn. Alongside 1382 apartments communal facilities including kindergartens and a library were also built.
Around 43 % of all apartments in Vienna are permanently tied to a use determined by social concerns. One quarter of the total existing housing stock belongs to the City. Dietmar Steiner explains the traditions of Viennese housing and reveals the challenges that must be reckoned with in the future.
