Essay: Translucent and Transparent – Metal Facades

The facade of the Thünen Institute by Staab Architekten in the port of Bremer- haven is composed of two alternating types of anodised aluminium panels, perforated to varying degrees, so that they appear as two distinct colours.
From mesh fabric to perforated sheet or cladding profiles: metal facades can be rigid, durable and safe as well as sensual, fragile and airy. These current projects demonstrate a wide variety of construction tasks and design solutions that use metal cladding in both classical and unconventional ways.
