Extension of the Academy of Art, Amsterdam

An expansive external staircase cuts its way through the building and leads up to the roof, which was conceived as an open-air working space designed to bear heavy loads.
Today, on what was once a parking area, stands an extension of the famous Gerrit Rietveld Academy of art and the associated Sandberg Institute. The existing structures were designed by Rietveld himself and by Benthem Crouwel. In 2011, the academy commissioned the second extension, which is mainly composed of jointly used spaces.
