Since 2004, the Berlin practice of David Chipperfield Architects has been housed in a late-19th-century brick building, a former piano factory in the city centre. The construction of four new volumes to complement the existing courtyard structure on the elongated site not only provided space for office growth; it also served to reorder the urban situation.
