The history of the museum is as dramatic as that of the ship inside it, which sank in the harbour of Stockholm on its first voyage in 1628, and was salvaged in 1961. An open competition in 1981 attracted 384 entrants, and after a re-run the winning Swedish entry was anything but unanimous. Protests, in the meantime have died down....
