Today, on what was once a parking area, stands an extension of the famous Gerrit Rietveld Academy of art and the associated Sandberg Institute. The existing structures were designed by Rietveld himself and by Benthem Crouwel. In 2011, the academy commissioned the second extension, which is mainly composed of jointly used spaces.

In selecting the architects, the art academy decided to stay close to the character of the community and launch an in-house competition open to teams with knowledge of the specific culture of the academy. The Fedlev group, initiated by the architect Paulien Bremmer, won, and this cooperative of designers and artists has turned its user expertise into a concept.
