The new department of the University of Silesia is so well integrated in its surroundings that it might easily go unnoticed. Drawn over the outside of a transformer station dating from the late 19th century is a latticework of open clinker blocks.

The location, in one of the oldest quarters of the city, had long been neglected. Now the architects have carefully integrated the new structure into the existing fabric, much of which had stood empty and was in need of rehabilitation. Today, students bring a new vitality to the district and help to enhance it.
