Though no Silicon Valley, London is nonetheless a popular location for small, dynamic start-ups, as recent trends have shown. Since last autumn, two dozen such companies have been conducting their business from Second Home, a converted carpet factory in east London.

The exterior of the three-storey, concrete-framed building, with alternating strip windows and dark brick spandrels, betrays its industrial past. With the conversion, the ground-floor front has been transformed into a glazed “tunnel” accommodating part of the in-house restaurant, which is also open to the public.

The office conversion by Madrid-based selgascano is limited to the ground floor and associated mezzanine, and covers an area of around 2,400 sqm with some 250 workplaces. The office club concept aims to strike a balance between communicative, open-plan spaces and smaller group offices for 5-20 persons.
