The site of the Finnish Science Center is in the northeast of Helsinki, where the busy railway line cuts the gently winding Keravanjoki River almost at right angles. It is the ideal setting to visualize the basic idea of the centre to exploit the contrapuntal elements of nature and technology and their enormous inherent aesthetic potential. The science centre was challenging in many respects. For one thing, there were hardly any classic examples to go on. The slanting, steelframed glass wall serves mainly to reduce noise pollution from the nearby railway track.
