The concept of environmental sustainability is largely ascribed to Hans Carl von Carlowitz of Freiberg in Saxony. Sylvicultura oeconomica, the book he published in 1713, is considered the first scientific work on forest management. It contains formulations of every modern ecological principle of action that is needed to ensure future viability. It is therefore obvious to build a forestry office using timber. So the designers of the Jena Holzland forestry office employed regional wood species for the structure, facade, claddings and interior finish.
