In 2009, the City of Strasbourg announced a competition to promote home ownership in the city and to fill gaps between buildings in the city centre: Ten small brownfield sites in urban ownership were to be sold at a low cost to owner-occupiers. In return, the applicants had to develop concepts that met three criteria: mixed use, low energy consumption and the use of renewable raw materials in the construction.

Five of the ten plots were sold in the course of the competition, including the 120 m2 corner property in the Krutenau district, on which the Strasbourg architect Dominique Coulon has meanwhile built his new residential and office building.
