For a successful energy transition, roofs and facades in Germany alone could provide up to 2,000 gigawatts of photovoltaic capacity, By comparison, Germany had a total of 54 gigawatts of installed capacity in 2020. Large buildings in particular lend themselves to the use of building-integrated photovoltaics due to their extensive facade surfaces. In view of rising energy prices, the payback periods for the additional cost involved are also currently decreasing significantly.
