In the bare landscape of northern Norway, this single-storey house crouches behind a protective tongue of land. The west side, where the two bedrooms are situated, is cut almost completely into the slope of the ground. Only the projecting timber-clad gable defies the raw climate. The living room on the east face, with its continuous strip windows, commands a view of the fjord, the sea and the mountains beyond. The recessed fronts between the living area and bedrooms afford protection for the entrance zone and terraces and serve to improve the daylighting and ventilation of the bedrooms. The large attic space is used as a boathouse. This timeless structure adopts the traditional forms and materials of the area and blends into the landscape.
