The St Vincent Caritas home in Ingolstadt was built for nearly 40 disabled children and young people. It is based on a therapeutic concept of sheltered accommodation in groups. The ensemble, which also incorporates a crèche, consists of three rectangular volumes of different height drawn round a main courtyard. In this way, the buildings screen the outdoor space from the noise of the road that runs past on the other side.

Pale green metal bands articulate the individual storeys of the volumes, and between these  horizontal strips, narrow, room-height window openings alternate with wall areas clad with a layer of vertical larch battens of different spacings. Depending on the angle of view, the facade shimmers – sometimes more, sometimes less strongly – in a similar pale-green tone through the battens. In the course of time, the effect of this play of colours will change, as the untreated wood weathers and assumes a greyish hue.
