The area surrounding the South Bund along the banks of the Huangpu, situated east of the historic urban core and in direct vicinity to the new in-quarter “Cool Docks”, used to be Shanghai’s port district. For the most part, the historic urban fabric dating back to the 1920s and 1930s is still present, and three-to four-story trade and storage buildings characterize the cityscape here. Sale and use conversion of a building during the rapid growth that took place in China in the recent years typically meant demolishing and replacing it with Western-oriented steel and glass skyscraper architecture. The adjacent skyline of Pudong emphasizes this.
