With the addition of a new annexe, this former dairy in Flanders is now used as a retreat for talented musicians preparing for a major Belgian music competition. It contains accommodation for four young people, a concert hall and an extensive library. The early 20th-century industrial building was renovated to house the foyer, exhibition hall, bedrooms and a small kitchen. Its tall brick chimney is a reminder of the building’s previous function. In terms of both colour and material, the annexe blends well into the ensemble, embedding it in the slope at the back. The outer wall of the concert hall is white-painted render, like the old dairy. On the roof of the concert hall is a cube covered with red engineering brick, analogous to the red tiles on the dairy roof. Around the cube is a ramp leading up to a sheltered terrace from where there is a superb view of the surrounding landscape.
