"The interior of this old wine warehouse in Azeitão, south of Lisbon, was gutted to convert it into a single-family house. The space programme was interpreted as a series of nine boxes that seem to float below the exposed timbers of the old roof. In fact these steel-framed rooms rest on cantilevered concrete decks anchored in the solid outer walls (up to 1 m thick). The ground floor is a single, communal living area; stairs and corridors are concealed between the new long walls and the original stone walls behind. Daylight enters this large (130 m2) lounge mainly via the end walls, whereas in the upper storeys, each individual “box” has an internal window, positioned opposite one of the original openings."
