In 2000, the explosion of a fireworks depot devasted much of Roombeek, a largely industrial zone in Enschede. The accident resulted in an area of 40-hectares that required redevelopment. The Villa Welpeloo is situated in a part of Roombeek with more exclusive singlefamily housing, designed in part by internationally recognized architects. The house consists to roughly 60 per cent of recycled materials – mainly local industrial waste products. New building elements include the concrete foundations, mechanical services and technical installations, sealing layers, the fenestration, and many of the internal finishings. The facade cladding consists of remnants of roughly 1,000 large wooden cable drums, of which only the slightly curved boards from the inner cylinder were used. These lend the face of the building a special texture.
