The bright, top-lit central hall is in tune with the client's wish to live in harmony with nature. Double-height sliding doors open on the north and south sides to allow the breeze to blow through the building. The hall marks the separation of western-style rooms (lounge, bedrooms, main entrance) on the east and traditional Japanese rooms on the west. The stairs in the open hall were designed to appear light, almost floating. Steel was chosen for the support structure, clad partly with wood, in keeping with the overall natural tone of the house. To allow a slimmer steel profile the stairs are supported at the level of the 6th step, and at the 10th step suspended from the parapet in the upper storey. Suspension points are hinged to allow for movement.
