In a six-floor apartment block, the client wished to convert the attic space into living accommodation. As the existing roof structure could not take any further loading, a new support structure of laminated timber purlins and raking supports was built in underneath the roof skin. Plywood sheets underneath the rafters and the composite decks of the galleries brace the whole structure. The tubular handrail and the [-section steel stringer of the gallery steps were welded into a frame in the workshop. Lateral stability is provided by the three cross braces fixed on site. The stairs are fixed to the edge of the gallery by means of an acoustically insulated screw attachment. The base point rests freely on rubber pads on the wooden floor.
